Known as the "Heart of Andalusia" because of its central location between the cities of Malaga, Granada, Córdoba, and Seville, Antequera in Spain is an excellent city to visit on any European city tour which includes the Andalusia region.  You can reach the city easily from the airport in Malaga by car hire.

Antequera is located 47 km north of the city of Malaga along the A45 road.  Nestled at the foot of the mountain ranges El Torcal and El Arco Clizo Chimenea, this route is a beautiful scenic drive.  The city overlooks the fertile valley bounded to the south by the Sierra de los Torcales, and to the north by the river Guadalhorce.

Many tourists and scientists come to see the Greater Flamingo at Antequera's saltwater lagoon Fuente de Piedra, which is one of the few nesting places for the bird in Europe.  The nearby limestone rock formation of the Torcal on a nature reserve is popular for climbers.  From here if you cross the Guadalhorce you can visit "Lovers' Rock", named for the legend of a young Christian man and his Moorish lover who threw themselves from the rock together while being chased by Moorish soldiers.  

Antequera contains an abundance of religious architecture.  The Church Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is a national monument built in a transition style between the late Gothic and Renaissance.  Some excellent example of Baroque style churches are The Convent of Madre de Dios de Monteagudo, the Church of St. John the Baptist, and the Church of Carmen.  There are only a few standing churches which can truly be considered Gothic; the Royal Monastery of San Zoilo and the Church of San Pedro are a couple.
